Best AI calorie tracker apps compared
Seven apps that log food from a photo, compared on facts you can check: what is free, what it costs and where each one falls short. We make one of them, so every claim links to its source.
Short answer
The best AI calorie tracker depends on what you refuse to give up. Cal AI is the biggest app built around photo logging, with over 374,000 US App Store ratings, but its listing says food scan results require a subscription.1 SnapCalorie (up to 3 AI logs a day)3 and Wellix (2 scans a day, plus up to 3 more with a short ad) are the two apps here that we could confirm offer AI photo logging free every day.
MyFitnessPal, Lose It! and Cronometer are established general-purpose trackers, and all three list photo logging as a paid feature.6,8,9

What each app is best for
Cal AI: the most established photo-first app
Cal AI has the most ratings of any app here that is built around photo logging: 374,127 on the US App Store and more than 1 million downloads on Google Play.1,13 You can also scan a barcode or describe a meal.2 The trade-off is the subscription: the listing says scan results require one, after a 3-day free trial. Cal AI's own FAQ describes it as "about 80% accurate".2
SnapCalorie: free daily logs, closest to the research
SnapCalorie gives you up to 3 AI logs a day for free, and its FAQ states an average of around 15% mean caloric error, a figure from the company itself.3 Its FAQ also says that its parent company, Perception Labs, co-authored the Nutrition5k food-image research paper with Google Research.3,14 The listing also describes measuring portions with the iPhone's camera.4 The App Store reports English as its only language.
Foodvisor: the widest language coverage
Foodvisor reports 20 languages, the most in this comparison, and has more than 10 million Google Play downloads.5,13 You can log by photo or barcode. Its Premium plan adds vitamin, mineral and micronutrient analysis and a personalised nutrition programme.5 Its listing does not say how much photo logging you get without paying, so check that in the app.
MyFitnessPal: the largest user base
MyFitnessPal is by far the largest app here, with more than 2.3 million US App Store ratings and over 100 million Google Play downloads.7,13 It has a free account, but both Meal Scan and Barcode Scan are Premium features.6 It is a sensible pick if the app's size matters more to you than free photo logging.
Lose It!: free tracking, paid photo logging
Lose It! keeps basic calorie tracking, a weight loss plan and community support free. Photo meal logging, AI voice logging, the barcode scanner and macronutrient tracking are all listed under Premium.8
Cronometer: the choice for micronutrients
Cronometer is built on what its listing calls a curated database of more than 1.1 million verified foods, and barcode scanning is free.9 Photo and voice logging are premium. Choose it if you care more about detailed nutrient data than about logging speed. The App Store reports English as its only language.
Wellix: free daily scans in 16 languages, but new
Wellix is ours, and it is the newest app here: it reached the App Store in July 2026 and has no US App Store ratings yet. What it offers is free AI scans every day, AI results (not just menus) in 16 languages, and published formulas for every calorie and macro target it sets. What it lacks is just as relevant: there is no barcode scanner, no sync with Apple Health or Health Connect, and we have not published a validated accuracy figure for our own scanner.
Cal AI alternatives, by the reason you are leaving
The right Cal AI alternative depends on why you want to leave, because the apps differ more on access than on features.
- You do not want to pay to see scan results: SnapCalorie (3 AI logs a day) or Wellix (2 scans a day, plus up to 3 more with a short ad).
- You want a lower price: compare what each store actually offers you. Cal AI's listed App Store plans top out at $29.99, the same as Wellix's annual plan, and Google Play lists Cal AI purchases from $9.99 to $59.99.13 The difference depends on which offer you are shown.
- You want a scanner in your own language: Foodvisor (20), MyFitnessPal (19) and Wellix (16) all report more languages than Cal AI (15). Wellix also returns its AI results in your language, and MyFitnessPal's Meal Scan needs Premium.
- You want a bigger food database and more tracking features: MyFitnessPal, Lose It! or Cronometer, accepting that photo logging is paid in all three.
- You want adaptive calorie targets: MacroFactor is not in this table because its listing does not describe photo logging, but its coaching adjusts your targets weekly. It has no free tier.10
Is there a free AI calorie tracker?
Yes, but in this comparison free always means a daily limit. SnapCalorie allows up to 3 AI logs a day.3 Wellix allows 2 scans a day, up to 3 more with a short ad, and 5 a day for the first 3 days. Cal AI, MyFitnessPal, Lose It! and Cronometer put AI photo logging behind a subscription, though MyFitnessPal, Lose It! and Cronometer also have free plans for ordinary manual tracking.
How accurate are AI calorie trackers?
The accuracy figures on these apps' own sites are claims from the companies themselves, and we found no independent test comparing these seven apps. Cal AI says "about 80% accurate", SnapCalorie says around 15% mean caloric error, and Wellix does not state a figure.2,3
Independent research gives a useful reference point. A 2025 peer-reviewed study of a general-purpose vision model found 30.5% mean absolute percentage error from a photo alone, improving to 13.9% once the ingredients were named.15 Telling an app what it cannot see seems to matter a great deal, whichever app you use. Our accuracy guide covers the evidence and how to read a vendor's claim.
How we built this comparison
We included apps whose own store listing or website describes logging food from a photo. We left out MacroFactor and YAZIO because their App Store listings do not describe photo logging, even though YAZIO's name includes "AI Calorie Tracker".10,11 Other photo-logging apps exist; these seven are a selection, not a census.
All facts come from each company's own store listing or website, read on 5 November 2026. There are no affiliate links, and nobody paid to be included. If something here is wrong or out of date, email support@wellix.cc and we will correct it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free AI calorie tracker?
Among the seven apps compared here, SnapCalorie and Wellix are the two we could confirm offer free AI photo logging every day. SnapCalorie allows up to 3 AI logs a day and reports English as its only App Store language. Wellix allows 2 scans a day, plus up to 3 more with a short ad, and works in 16 languages, but it launched in July 2026 and has no US App Store ratings yet.
Is Cal AI free?
Not for scanning. The Cal AI App Store listing states that food scanning analysis results require a subscription, and its website offers a 3-day free trial. Its listing shows several "Unlimited" plans from $2.99 to $29.99, and the price you are shown can vary.
Which AI calorie trackers work on Android?
All seven apps in this comparison are on Google Play as well as the App Store. On 5 November 2026 Google Play showed over 100 million downloads for MyFitnessPal, over 10 million each for Lose It! and Foodvisor, over 5 million for Cronometer, over 1 million for Cal AI, over 500,000 for SnapCalorie and over 100 for Wellix.
Does Wellix have a barcode scanner?
No. Wellix logs food from a photo, a text description or your voice. If you mostly eat packaged food and want barcode scanning, Cronometer lists it as free, and Cal AI and Foodvisor also offer it. MyFitnessPal and Lose It! include it in Premium.
Are AI calorie trackers accurate enough to lose weight?
They can be, if you use them consistently and correct what the camera cannot see, such as cooking oil. Published research on a general-purpose vision model found about 30% error from a photo alone and about 14% once the ingredients were named. App makers publish their own figures, and we found no independent test comparing these seven apps.
